Remembering Bosnia

Posted under Everyday

So today I was hanging out at a coffee shop and some one spilled a coffee on the sidewalk out side. Eventually a maintenance guy comes around and sees it, how does he clean it up? A hose of course. If that wasn’t enough I hear someone in the coffee shop hang up their cell phone with a “Hvala puno!” I asked where he was from and of course he replies “Former Yugoslavia” I tried to continue the conversation, but he was on his way out.

Ah, Bosnia.

Geek Post: Noise Canceling Headphones and Film Shoots

Posted under Everyday & Geeky Stuff

As you may know I worked on a shoot over the last weekend doing sound. One of the boom ops brought a pair of Bose Noise Canceling Headphones. I had used these before for music listening. They sound pretty good, especially in a noisy environment like an airplane. I was interested to see how they performed on a shoot, since good isolation is essential to capturing good sound.

Let me start by explaining the basic’s of noise canceling headphones:

Outside sounds
Go into
Microphone and signal processor on headphones
Which then
Inverts the phase of the external noise and plays the noise canceling signal through the headphones.

This way the only thing you hear is the signal coming through the headphones. The process isn’t perfect but it comes close.

Enter the problem. What happens if the signal going to the headphones is the same as the external sounds. (Like monitoring on a film shoot.)

Well as it turns out. The headphones try to cancel the incoming signal because it so closely resembles the external noises. This becomes especially apparent when you record loud noises.

The bottom line: If I was wearing the canceling headphones while monitoring a shotgun mic and yelled into the room. The sound of me yelling would drop out almost completely. Not good for monitoring! It would seem nothing can beat a good pair of closed over the ear headphones. Like the Sennheiser HD280’s which provide a fantastic 32dbSPL of attenuation.
